Assess

In the discover phase, we inspect your IT environment to determine the current situation and determine the general feasibility of a migration to the Azure cloud. We need to look at the topology of your network, the machines, the operating systems and the applications that you are using. The information that we collect is collated into a report detailing our findings and recommendations. The ASSESS phase is considered a pre-project phase and is conducted free of charge.

Plan

Using the topological information collected during the assess phase, a map of all on-premises applications, virtual machines, and servers is created to determine existing software dependencies and network connections. The map is used as a basis to evaluate an optimal migration strategy for each application and server, and determine an appropriate sequence in which the applications will be migrated. At this stage the future IT environment has been defined along with a gap analysis, and a project plan of the steps needed to be performed.

Moving

There are many strategies that can be used for cloud migration depending on the software architecture and it’s dependencies. Rehost, often referred to as ‘lift and shift’ is the simplest method to migrate applications to the cloud without any code changes. Minor changes to the code known as refactoring, or more fundamental changes to the basic application design, known as rearchitecting, may be necessary to get the software to run in the cloud. Completely rebuilding an application from scratch using cloud native technologies such as those found on the Azure platform is an option if the software architecture prohibits a migration to the cloud (e.g. hardware dependency).

Choosing

Replacement of an existing application with an appropriate alternative already available as a service in the cloud can be considered as a cost-effective form of migration (e.g. Office365 vs. Exchange Server) and as an alternative to not moving a singular application to the cloud - either though simple retirement, or, by simply retaining a single application on-premises in a hybrid-cloud scenario.

Optimize & Support

Following the cloud migration is a great potential to optimize costs by monitoring the needs of each application and reducing computing capacity or shutting down applications during the night completely. The Azure cloud provides state-of-the-art security against cyber-attacks, viruses and malware in addition to detailed monitoring with the Azure Monitor and top data protection strategies using built in data back-up services. Azure is certified to be GDPR ISO 27001, HIPAA, FedRAMP, SOC 1 und SOC 2 s compliant.
